To-Dos, Calendars + Post-its, Oh My! 5 Tools For Organising Your Best Year Ever!

“If it’s not scheduled, it’s not real.”

~ Marie Forleo

Yesterday, I spent the entire day in my home office, planning, scheduling and colour-coding the year ahead.

And I loved every second of it.

After posting a photo of my gorgeous creation on instagram, I was asked to share some tips and tools on how I organise and plan my year, so here we go!

Find What Works For You

I’m a very visual person, so when it comes to goal setting and planning, I NEED things to be written down in front of me – preferably in hot pink or turquoise to really grab my attention. I need order. I need clarity on what’s coming up. I need to have it all set out in front of me like a treasure map.

I’ve always been this way, but I didn’t realise it until recently. Which is why up until the last year, I was terrible at goal setting and organisation. But once I learned what I needed to do, how I needed to approach it in order for it to work for me, everything changed.

What works for you might be completely different. It’s essential that you find it and rock it in your own wild way.

Make It Fun!

As the Editor-In-Chief of Wild Sister Magazine, creator of the Wild Sisterhood, blogger, and, in my spare time, fiction writer, I often have a lot on my to-do list. Before I started getting smart about organisation, my to-do lists made me anxious, overwhelmed and stressed, and many things were constantly being overlooked and forgotten about.

It wasn’t fun and I knew it was affecting my business.

Then, at the beginning of 2013, I started using my girl Leonie’s yearly workbooks, and they made me realize that goal setting and planning ahead can be awesomely fun. Now it’s my favorite part of the year!

And in 2014, I’m adding more tools to my organisation belt.

These tools are inexpensive, easy to use, and completely eliminates all those anxieties I used to have.

5 Tools For Organising Your Best Year Ever:

1. Big-ass calendar

I’m in love with my new wall calendar {found on Etsy}. It’s colourful, it’s pretty, and it makes me excited about the year ahead. I can’t stop staring at it!

Having everything clearly laid out in front of me makes me feel so good about the future, makes it easy to prioritise, and ensures I’m ready for action ahead of time.

2. Post-It notes

I really hate how messy it looks to scribble/white out things I’ve written down on calendars when plans change {and they often do}. To keep my calendar looking pretty all year long, I’ve written all the Wild Sister projects, launches and schedules onto individual post-it notes and stuck them on the appropriate date. This way, if plans change, I can just move the post-it note.

I also colour-coded my post-its based on projects; pink is for Wild Sister, yellow is for my fiction deadlines, green is for my husband’s fiction deadlines, and orange is for events such as parties or commitments.

I also used a pink highlighter to draw a little marker on the release dates for every new edition of Wild Sister Magazine.

3. To-Do List book

I learned this from the lovely Leonie Dawson. Every year I buy a new A4 binder notebook that I use for ideas, brainstorming, drafting copy for the website, and to-do lists. It keeps everything in one place and I always have it with me when I’m working.

4. Asana

I’ve been using this little gem a lot recently. It’s great for me because I can type in all my tasks, set a deadline date and even have it remind me closer to the due date so I don’t forget about anything.

My admin team are also connected to it so we can share tasks and keep on track with each others’ progress, and then tick it off once it’s done. Brilliant!

5. 2014 Create Your Amazing Year Workbooks

This is where I get the dreaming done. I release the last year, welcome the new, and get ridiculously clear on what I want and how I’m going to get it. When it comes to making my dreams a reality, this is where I start.

There you have it, lovely! All the tools I use to keep my life and business organised, efficient and awesome!

I hope I’ve introduced you to some new fun ways of creating your life.

Here’s to a rockin’ 2014!
