What do you feel when you think of the word ‘Change’? What sorts of images, memories, thoughts come to your mind? Does the phrase ‘Be the Change You Wish to See’ sound like someone’s idea of a mean joke, or setting an impossible task that will set a person up for failure? Does it sound like a vague phrase – a great theory but not actually meaning anything real?
I remember the first time I heard someone say ‘Be the Change.’ I didn’t understand, I didn’t get it. I heard the words but they meant virtually nothing to me. Empty phrase leading to empty results.
I wasn’t ready to hear them. I wasn’t ready to understand. I wasn’t there… YET.
For most of my life, I have been surrounded by, or encountered in varying amounts, people who did not get me or the things I dreamed of doing. People who derided with such venom others who expressed the things I secretly wished for, the things I secretly wanted to do. I learned not to speak up. To be careful with who I share my ideas with. To be careful of who I shared me with.
I learned to question myself, even more deeply. To assume the self-doubt meant that my ideas were wrong. That I must be wrong. It became such second nature that I grew to disbelieve any of my thoughts or ideas, unless others believed in them, too.
That doesn’t mean I stopped having my ideas, my thoughts and vision for the world or for me. But I learned not to follow them.
I didn’t see, I couldn’t see, how I could possibly ever achieve the things I wanted to do. The things I’ve always wanted to do.
When I was 28, I finally ended what had been a difficult, emotionally abusive and destructive relationship. It took time, counselling and trusting a friend to finally see what must have been so clear from the outside. Once I let him know the break we’d given our relationship needed to become a permanent end, it felt strange. I felt lighter, but also less whole. Like there was a piece of my body missing, and I hadn’t noticed it was gone all that time we were together. Through continuing to work on building back my self-confidence with the counsellor, good friends and trusting in my immediate family, I began putting the pieces back together. I began finding me again. Or at least the beginning of me.
It felt strange, it felt scary, and it felt like a grand unknown. I made a few stumbles, I took a few steps backward and then came forwards again. I realised that, for so long, I’d been in a state of stress. A literal state of stress in my body and mind, that I just didn’t know how not to feel that way. To not have the daily stress, the fights, the fears… to suddenly not have those things anymore – it felt unnatural to me. It felt strange. It felt unlike anything I’d been used to, for so long, that I didn’t recognise what it was to feel good. To feel healthy, to feel supported, to feel unafraid. My body and muscles – my very cells – were so not used to the endorphins coming in, they went in a bit of a state of shock.
To not be in a state of stress felt weird, it felt strange…it didn’t feel right. Not yet.
Then, one day, something inside me clicked. A voice said to me, so clearly and loudly ‘It will be OK…’ I stopped, in my tracks, and I listened. I cried a bit and I stood still.
Gradually, I started spending more time in nature. More time being quiet. More time meditating. More time eating healthier, more time doing positive things with friends. My confidence grew, I felt better and more at peace within and I learned it was OK to ask for help.
I learned that I didn’t have to do everything alone.
And then came the day I spoke my truth. A hard truth. A truth that I knew came from the heart, was important and though it might not have been what the other person was expecting, I think they felt it, too. I think they felt the energy I felt. The energy I now realise I was sending, through the sheer force of the deep, inner, loving and knowing that came from within. And they listened. They didn’t agree, but they listened, and they thought about it. I felt good. I let myself feel good. I let the serotonin I felt from being brave, from speaking my truth, from taking a chance and following what I believed – I let it flow through my body and it was ok.
It meant the world to me.
It is often the first step that is the hardest. But the speed at which incredible, positive, exciting and wondrous changes come from there can awe and amaze. We can put so much pressure on ourselves, and may think that change needs to be difficult to be real or meaningful.
I now know what ‘Be the Change’ means.
It means speaking your truth. It means following what you know, in your heart of hearts, is right. What is important, what is meaningful, and what is beautiful. It means believing in you, and that everything will be ok.
It means championing that cause even if others are telling you it won’t work or make a difference. It means going for that promotion or project pitch even if there are others you worry may be more qualified. It means making that amazing idea you’ve been thinking about finally happen, and if you’re not sure how, telling others and asking if there is anyone who could help you. It means not letting obstacles or difficulties get in your way if you have a dream, a vision or an idea that won’t let go. That keeps telling you, ‘You CAN do this! Please, give me a chance…give YOU a chance…How AWESOME would it be?’
It means taking those scary, first steps and then doing them again, and again, and again. And feeling such joy, such excitement, such confidence and deep, inner knowing that YOU HAVE GOT THIS.
You deserve this happiness. You can make it happen.
It’s no longer a huge step, as you do it more and more – it becomes easier and an entirely new way of life.
Change comes from within each and every one of us. It comes from following our dreams. It comes from speaking our innermost, heartfelt truth. It comes from believing that we can make a difference, we can create change, we can make our lives and this world so much happier, more beautiful. We can make it the amazing place we have always wanted it to be. It comes from understanding that each and everyone one of us started somewhere. With an idea, with a vision, with a dream. And that as we all learn through repeating the positive steps and actions, not only will our bodies learn to feel good, but we will help others around us feel good, too. Because when the world sees the amazing, magnificent, incredible changes we have been able to create in our lives, it inspires them to make their own.
Big steps don’t have to come all at once – we all learned to run by taking the first, few, faltering steps when we were only small, innocent infants and discovering our world for the first time.
Be the change you wish to see in the world. We each can.
