Next week, I’m flying off to China.
If you’ve been following Wild Sister for a while, you’ll know I spent a life-changing year there in 2010-2011. It’s where I started to love myself, and where Wild Sister was born.
Everything about me and my life transformed for the better that year.
At 23 years old, spending that year abroad in such a vastly different culture made me grow up very quickly. I realised that a lot of what I’d been taught – at school, by the media, by the society I grew up in – wasn’t necessarily the truth; it was just what was culturally accepted, assumed, and widely believed.
It opened my mind and taught me about acceptance – to accept other cultures, people and beliefs for what they are and respect it all, even if I don’t necessarily understand it all.
For me personally, that year in China showed me how strong, capable, and determined I can be.
And I’ve been addicted to travel ever since.
Nothing teaches you more about yourself and the world like travel.
It opens your eyes to the world and forces you to realize that there’s so much more to life than what we’ve been taught to believe. There’s adventure, freedom, and so much beautiful diversity.
The more I set out to discover the world, the more I end up discovering myself.
It’s quite a powerful experience to learn about the world and yourself simultaneously. Nothing opens your mind, heart and soul more.
But I haven’t mentioned the best part of my trip; I’m going with my Mum and brothers. I’ll have the privilege of seeing their faces the first time they climb the Great Wall and walk down the narrow Beijing hutongs.
I don’t remember the last time I went on a holiday with my Mum, and she hasn’t been overseas since before I was born, so this will be a very special trip indeed.
To make sure I really savour every moment, I’ll be taking time off from Wild Sister while I’m away. I’ll be gone for about a month, and for the first time in years, I won’t have my laptop with me.
But never fear, wild one; I’ve scheduled some great guest posts for the blog to go live each week, so stay tuned.
And if you’re keen to follow my adventures in Beijing, come join me on Instagram.
